The British Racing School and Hartpury University hail success of new industry degree

The British Racing School and Hartpury University now offer a three-year degree programme designed specifically for those passionate about the horseracing industry. At the end of a successful programme of study, students will achieve a BSc (Hons) Horseracing Industry degree.

This specialist degree has been designed to help those within the horseracing industry broaden their horizons and open opportunities for a lifelong career in horseracing.

The programme is tailored for individuals already working in the horseracing sector, particularly those who have completed the Level 3 Diploma in Racehorse Care and Management or equivalent. The curriculum covers a comprehensive range of topics including racehorse health and nutrition, race planning, performance analysis, and the structure and administration of the horseracing industry.

Designed to accommodate the busy schedules of industry professionals, the programme includes monthly weekend teaching sessions, week-long intensive courses, and self-directed home study.

The degree programme is structured to provide a deep understanding of the horseracing industry through a variety of modules:

  • Year 1 focuses on racehorse welfare and management, and the organisation of the horseracing industry.
  • Year 2 builds on academic skills with modules on thoroughbred life cycles, race planning, and performance analysis.
  • Year 3 prepares students for research projects and explores entrepreneurship, environmental sustainability, and global challenges in horseracing.

Students attend guest lectures with industry experts and participate in practical work placements, enhancing their real-world experience and professional networks.

Notably, they benefit from the world-class facilities at both The British Racing School and Hartpury University. The British Racing School’s purpose-built training centre on the outskirts of Newmarket is the headquarters of British Flat racing, while Hartpury University boasts some of the most advanced equine educational facilities in the world with a campus that’s received over £50 million investment in the last 10 years.

Duncan Gregory, Operations Director of The British Racing School said: “We are delighted to be offering this important qualification alongside Hartpury University for individuals wanting to develop a comprehensive knowledge of British Racing and broaden their skillset. The Honours programme offers deep insight into this exciting global industry and the chance for students to expand their network and access career opportunities for them within the sport.”

Catherine Porter, Head of Equine at Hartpury University said: “We’re proud to be partnering with The British Racing School to deliver this innovative Horseracing Industry degree, providing unique opportunities for individuals to develop their skills and progress within the racing sector. Being able to draw on the facilities and experience of both The British Racing School and Hartpury University is a hugely exciting and unique proposition for students.”

Students with other qualifications and previous learning towards a university level qualification or relevant work experience may count as a credit towards this course. There is also a BSc (Hons) Top-up Level 6 for this programme.
