Phillip Cheetham, Equine Director at Hartpury University and Hartpury College, has been awarded the prestigious Medal of Honour by British Dressage in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the sport throughout his esteemed career.
The award was presented during the new ‘BD Presents’ event, hosted at Hartpury Equine from 23-24 November by British Dressage Chief Executive Jason Brautigam and Chairman Jill Day. The accolade celebrates Phillip’s unwavering dedication to advancing the sport at both national and international levels.
Phillip has played a pivotal role in organising the ever-popular NAF Five Star Hartpury Festival of Dressage, which takes place annually in July, drawing top riders and enthusiastic spectators alike. In 2022, he was instrumental in delivering the FEI Dressage and Eventing European Championships for Young Riders and Juniors, once again showcasing his ability to stage world-class equestrian events supported by his outstanding support team.
Beyond his work at Hartpury, Phillip is an accomplished FEI Steward who has officiated at five Paralympic Games, including the most recent edition in Paris. His extensive expertise and professionalism have left an indelible mark on the equestrian community as well as staff and students at Hartpury.
Phillip has supported and inspired many students to pursue roles within the industry, using his extensive knowledge and contacts to help. Students have been given opportunities to help with event management and organisation, work on the yard or in the office, and even try their hand at commentating at the centre’s numerous dressage and showjumping competitions. These opportunities have often opened valuable connections and proved pivotal in the students’ careers.
Rosie Scott-Ward, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Hartpury University said: “Phillip’s unwavering dedication, professionalism, and passion for dressage have significantly shaped the sport as well as our own equestrian centre here at Hartpury. Ultimately, his passion for horses is evident in the management and care of our own horses, and he continues to inspire the next generation of riders, enthusiasts and event organisers through the busy calendar of competitions we host.
“His leadership and dedication to excellence continue to elevate Hartpury as a hub for equestrian sport and education. The Medal of Honour is a fitting tribute to his remarkable career.”
The award ceremony was a highlight of ‘BD Presents’, British Dressage’s new training event concept, designed to offer relatable, accessible, and practical coaching for riders at all levels. Hosts included Olympian Becky Moody and Paralympian Sophie Wells, supported by Kelly Jewel – a former student of Hartpury University.
