Hartpury University academics co-opted to influential zoo research committee

Three Hartpury University academics now contribute to the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) research committee. The recent appointment of Prof. Vicky Melfi as a co-opted member, alongside PhD student Georgia Oaten (Research Engagement sub-group), join PhD student Polly Doodson (Social Sciences sub-group), underscores the university’s unwavering commitment to conservation and education.

The BIAZA research committee, known for its pivotal role in advancing wildlife research and conservation efforts, has welcomed these seasoned professionals to contribute their expertise and passion to zoo-related research. These appointments further solidify the longstanding link between Hartpury University and BIAZA, reflecting a shared commitment to protecting and preserving the natural world. They also mark the continuation of the partnership as Dr Wanda McCormick (Head of Animal and Agriculture at Hartpury University) has previously served on the committee for many years.

The BIAZA Research Committee plays an important role in supporting member collections and researchers in carrying out the highest quality zoo and aquarium research. Importantly, many of the research and conservation programmes have public education as a core component, raising awareness about these important topics.

Prof.  Vicky Melfi, Professor in Human-Animal Interactions at Hartpury University said: “I know I also speak for my colleagues when I say that it’s a real privilege to have been co-opted to this important committee. Zoos and Aquariums are a unique resource, offering exciting opportunities for collaborations with universities, so that together we can better explore and increase our understanding of behaviour, conservation and wellbeing, with the goal of saving species and making planet positive changes.  It is key that we promote high-quality research with Zoos and Aquariums, so the committee provide vital support to submitted    proposals which are carefully reviewed, to ensure animal welfare is paramount and they are scientifically rigorous.  This ensures members can focus their limited resources and focus on the most valuable studies.”

BIAZA is also a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) and the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), offering a further network to cover all aspects of conservation science, natural history and environmental education and animal welfare.

Research is an integral part of life at Hartpury University, with staff and students supported to carry out impactful research activities that make a real-world difference. Research submitted as part of the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 process was recognised as ‘world-leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’.

Hartpury University offers a range of high quality undergraduate and postgraduate animal degrees including the ever-popular BSc (Hons) Zoology. A brand new MSc Biodiversity Conservation has also been introduced for September 2024.
