Hartpury College students take part in regional Big Health Day

Big-Health-Day-2023

Sport students from Hartpury College once again helped people with learning disabilities find ways to stay healthy and active at an annual fun-packed event in Gloucestershire.

104 students studying Level 3 Extended Diploma Sport (Physical Education and Coaching) volunteered to help out at the 15th Annual Big Health Day at Oxstalls Sports Park in Gloucester last Friday 16 June 2023.

Students supported the event which is aimed at helping people with learning disabilities with complex physical and health needs and those with physical and mental health needs to stay active and healthy. The day is also to highlight the wealth of amazing organisations and services we have in Gloucestershire and partners in surrounding counties that can make a difference in reducing health inequalities and improving quality of life.

The students showcased a range of ways to stay healthy and active, giving attendees the chance to try trampolining, boccia, golf, powerchair football and spike ball to name a few inclusive sports. As well as trying new activities, visitors to the event were also able to meet representatives from 120+ health and social care stalls.

Hartpury joined other private and voluntary organisations creating awareness of activities and voluntary work including the Mounted Police, Veterans Support Services, Smoothie Bike Project, Sailing for the Disabled, Kingfisher Treasure Seekers, Inclusion Gloucestershire, Scrubditch Farm Animals, Active Impact, Allsorts, County Hate Crime and many more.

Laura Simmonds, Subject Leader for General Sport at Hartpury College, said: “It’s always such an honour for us to be part of this important community event and I’m delighted that this year’s students really embraced their opportunity to promote the power of sport and activity for all.

“Our students always find the experience extremely rewarding and volunteer straight away whenever we offer them the opportunity to get involved. It’s a great chance for our students to learn new skills, gain confidence and make a real difference to the lives of everyone taking part.”

Volunteering opportunities play an important role in life at Hartpury, adding valuable work and life skills to the students’ academic studies. Opportunities to get involved with volunteering exist right across campus including at the on-campus equestrian events, sports matches and through the running of student-led events and initiatives.

The Innovation, Careers and Enterprise (ICE) Centre holds a database of employers and regularly advertises opportunities for students to gain experience in the workplace either as a placement, volunteering or as paid work.
