Your kit and equipment

Students on all courses should make sure they have the following items:

• Notebook
• Writing paper (A4 size)
• Loose-leaf binder (preferably lever arch)
• One pack of file dividers
• Pens, pencils, ruler, eraser, pencil sharpener
• Calculator (statistical)
• One pack multi-punched pockets
• Coloured pencils
• Laptop or tablet – check our guidance for minimum laptop specification

• A4 lever arch files (at least two per subject)
• File dividers (at least four packs of 10)
• Rough work spiral bound notebook
• Pens, pencils and highlighter
• Subject textbook
• Relevant sport kit for academies
• Scientific calculator (depending on your subject)

• Green gilet (optional)
• Leather boots with steel toe caps
• Wellington boots with steel toe caps
• Waterproof coat and leggings
• Two pairs of working overalls / boiler suits to stay at college for biosecurity reasons

• Strong waterproof coat and trousers/leggings
• Leather boots with steel toe caps
• Leather working gloves
• Wellington boots/walking boots and gaiters
• Long woollen socks (shooting socks)
• Checked shirts
• Moleskin trousers / breeks (tweed breeks/plus fours can also be worn for shoot days)
• Warm hat and gloves
• Overalls to stay at college for biosecurity reasons

• One pair of wellington boots with steel toe caps (safety wellies) and/or one pair of steel toe-capped ankle boots (safety boots) – we would recommend the purchase of both items of footwear to prepare you for working indoors and outdoors in a range of terrain conditions
• Black overalls
• Black waterproof coat
• Black lab coat for use in the animal collection
• Micropore tape to cover any non-removeable piercings

• British Standard approved skull cap (PAS015+kitemark, SNELL E2001 or E2016, or ASTM F1163+SEI mark) with navy or black hat silk (all students)*
• Body protector (correctly fitted) to BETA 2009 Level 3 only (Equitation students only)
• Navy (not denim), black, grey or beige jodhpurs/breeches for all riding sessions. Black/dark fitted jeans for working horses from the ground, ground schooling and yard practical sessions with sensible yard boots
• Long riding boots (rubber or leather) or smooth leather gaiters (not suede) with matching jodhpur boots (black or brown)
• Schooling whip (Equitation students only, maximum length 30”)
• Jumping whip (Equitation students only)
• Wristwatch
• One pair of yard boots for non-riding practical sessions (optional, as an alternative to riding boots)
• If asthmatic, dust mask required
• Waterproof trousers and wellington boots (optional but highly recommended)
• Mane comb, hoof pick and rubber plaiting bands (all students)

Please note, you’re not permitted on the yard wearing any form of jewellery (except a wedding ring) due to safety guidelines. This includes all piercings, which must not be covered. Daith piercings must be authorised before admission onto the yard.

*BSEN1384 hat standards (on their own) won’t be permitted due to regulation changes.

Students who wish to take British Horse Society examinations in addition to their main programme will need to adhere to BHS Exams Dress Code. BHS exam training and fees are at an additional cost.

Level 2 Extended Certificate in General Sport/Specialist Sport, Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science and Level 3 Foundation Diploma/Extended Diploma Sport (Fitness) and (PE and Coaching) will also need:

• Tracksuit
• Outdoor and indoor sports footwear
• Kit bag
• Waterproof clothing
• Shorts
• Polo shirt
• Water bottle
• 3 x lever arch folders and dividers (Level 3 Foundation/Extended Diploma Sport (Fitness), (PE and Coaching), and Level 3 Extended Diploma Extended Diploma Sport and Exercise Science only)
• Whistle (Level 3 Foundation/Extended Diploma Sport (Fitness) and (PE and Coaching) only)
• Football boots for use on rubber crumb surfaces†
  Level 3 Foundation/Extended Diploma Sport (Rugby) will also need:
• Rugby boots and indoor footwear
• Protective equipment e.g. gum shield, head guard and shoulder padding
• Boots for use on rubber crumb surfaces†
• 3 x lever arch folders and dividers

Level 3 Foundation/Extended Diploma Sport (Football) will also need:

• Football boots and indoor footwear
• Shin pads
• Football boots for use on rubber crumb surfaces†

Level 3 Foundation/Extended Diploma Sport (Golf) will also need:

• Most recent Rules of Golf book
• Set of golf clubs
• Golf bag
• Golf shoes (two pairs)
• Golf umbrella
• Waterproof clothing
• Appropriate golf clothing for practicals
• 3 x lever arch folders and dividers

†Please note that rubber-studded boots must be worn on the rubber crumb pitches when taking part in practical and sports sessions. Trainers and flat-soled shoes are not to be worn on the pitches. If inappropriate footwear is worn, you will not be able to take part in the activity.

• Wetsuit boots or old trainers to use for water activities
• Waterproof jacket and trousers
• Thermal fleece top
• Walking boots – must have ankle support (not approach shoes)
• Daysack capable of carrying both personal and safety equipment for a day’s walking – at least 30 litres capacity (hip straps encouraged but not essential)
• Sports shorts (UPS only)
• Sports shirts (UPS only)
• Running trainers (UPS only)

Level 3 Foundation/Extended Diploma Sport Outdoor Activities and Uniformed Protective Services will also need:

• 1 litre water bottle
• Small personal first aid kit
• Hat and gloves
